The Align Tools in Adobe Illustrator are fantastic! They allow us to arrange and distribute the vector objects in our workspace with one single click!

THE ALIGN PANEL AND ITS TOOLS

Adobe Illustrator is mostly a software designed for artistic purposes. However, it also allows for the creation of fairly accurate technical drawings, that can be easily exported to CAD or 3D design software solutions, such as Autodesk’s AutoCAD, Maya or 3D Studio Max, to name a few.

For this reason, even though it does not have a defined coordinate system per se, Adobe Illustrator allows the creation of vectors that can be measured in real life units–such as pixels, centimeters or inches–by making use of the accurate smart guides and grids.

One of the most useful precision tools that Illustrator has to offer, is the Align Tools.

Thanks to these tools, we can easily align vector objects based in a wide range of options; from the center of each object, their right or left side, vertical or horizontal alignment, top or bottom, etc…

The Align Tools can be found either in the Panels bar, under the ALIGN tab; in the quick link bar at the top of the Workspace when the Selection Tool is selected; or at the menu Window > Align.

We also have three types of aligning methods: Align to Selection, Align to Key Object or Align to Artboard.

WATCH THE VIDEO (SPANISH AUDIO)

The following video explores the Layer Panel of Adobe Illustrator, and it shows in depth the contents shown in this post. Unfortunately, the audio is only available in Spanish. But if you feel up to it, you can give it a try! Seeing the position and look of the Panel and its tools on a practical example will be helpful; regardless of the speech 🙂
